Kinderdijk and its windmills are UNESCO world heritage site. We had visited this beautiful place back in 2017. It was part of today’s included tour on the Viking SKADI. Not much has changed since the last we visited.

As you make the walk to the heritage site, you will see this unusual object floating next the entrance to the windmills.
Kinderdijk means “children’s dike” and this cradle with a child and baby is referring to the St. Elizabeth flood of 1421, which took many lives. After the a local boy went to the inspect the damage at two dikes. He found a wooden cradle rocking in the water with a cat jumping back-and-forth to keep it afloat. An interesting story if not very believable.

The Netherlands has a total of 28 windmills with 19 being at Kinderdijk. This makes for a must see visit.

Seeing one of the largest collections of 18th-century windmills of Kinderdijk, a Dutch village nestled at the confluence of two rivers — the Lek and the Noord, is a fantastic experience. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx
